“Last Night in Soho” è un film diretto Edgar Right e coscritto con Krysty Wilson-Cairns. E’ un film horror psicologico del 2021 con protagonisti Thomasin Mckanzie, Anya Taylor Joy e Matt Smith. Il film è stato presentato al 78° Festival di Venezia, ha ricevuto critiche molto positive dalle critiche hanno elogiato la scenografia, i costumi, la regia e le interpretazioni. Il film segna la fine dell’interpretazioni degli attori Rigg e Margareth Nolan.

TRAMA
Eloise Turner, per tutti Ellie, è una ragazza sognatrice con un grande talento per il disegno e decide di lasciare il suo paesino idilliaco di campagna per trasferirsi a Londra per diventare stilista. Inizialmente trova difficoltà ad integrarsi con gli altri studenti quindi trova pernottamento in un monolocale tenuto da un’anziana signora di nome Collins, ma con l’andare avanti i sogni cominciano a farsi sempre ossessivi tanto da farle confondere la realtà con l’immaginazione

Eloise Turner/Thomasin Mckenzie: E’ una ragazza appassionata di moda che lascia la sua casa di campagna per traferirsi a Londra a studiare al London Collage of Fashion, ma con il passare della sua permanenza affitta un appartamento a Soho, capisce che in quella casa è successo qualcosa di terribile

Alexandra “Sandie” Collins/Anya Taylor Joy: E’ un aspirante cantante degli anni 60, la sua determinazione assomiglia molto a quella di Ellie solo con qualche sfumatura oscura in più

Sviluppo
Edgar Wright scrisse per la prima volta ne 2007 e ha presentato la trama come un San Valentino horror nel quartiere di Soho. Edgar Right è cresciuto a Somerset e dopo aver compiuto diciotto anni coltivò la sua ossessione per la musica anni ’60, cosi questa sua passione ha contribuito a scrivere e approfondire i temi di Last Night in Soho.

Sceneggiatura
Dopo la conclusione di “Baby Driver” invece di lavorare ad un sequel per il film, cominciò a lavorare ad una cosa completamente diversa e disse che le scene dovevano essere come sogni cosi telefonò a Wilson-Cairns e gli chiese se voleva co-scrivere la sceneggiatura di The Last Night in Soho cosi insieme a Lucy Pardee decisero di scrivere il film negli anni 60 cosi da descrivere la storia della zona in quel periodo.
Poi Wilson-Cairns disse che il pubblico avrebbe dovuto innamorarsi di Sandie cosi girò una scena in cui Anya Taylor Joy fece un audizione di la canzone di “Downtown” di Petula Clark

Edgar Right presentò a Anya Taylor Joy la bozza di “Last Night in Soho” e inizialmente venne presentata come Eloise, ma in seguito le diedero il ruolo di Sandie, mentre Matt Smith e Thomasin McKenzie vennero scritturati dopo

Gran parte delle canzoni scelte erano degli anni ’60 come ad esempio la canzone di Petula Clark DownTown fatta eseguire da Anya Taylor Joy dopo di che l’hanno stampato in un doppio vinile

Eloise è una giovane che è innamorata degli anni ’60 con una passione per la moda, cosi arriva a Londra per frequentare London Collage of Fashion, ma si scopre purtroppo inadeguata per i suoi gusti retrò diventando il bersaglio delle compagne.
Dopodiché prende in affitto un appartamento di proprietà di una signora anziana e ogni notte appena si addormenta si risveglia nei panni di Sandy, interpretata da Anya Taylor Joy un aspirante cantante appassionata di musica degli anni ’60 cosi Edgar Right posa il faro su quegli anni, cosi Eloise “diventando” Sandy la vede ricattata dal suo protettore e abusata da alcuni uomini di spettacolo.
Gli sceneggiatori costruiscono due livelli narrativi che funzionano allo specchio che sono Eloise e Sandy: Eloise nel presente e Sandy nel passato e tra le due l’opposizione è anche caratteriale, Eloise è timida e riservata mentre Sandy si dimostra sempre spregiudicata e fa di tutto per diventare famosa fino a farla diventare la vittima, quindi il racconto da thriller ha delle venature horror, su tutto questo però girano gli anni ’60 motivi del film che trascina la colonna sonora di cui vale la visione del film. Edgar Right mostra una nostalgia di un’epoca mai vissuta, ma di cui è attratto magneticamente e ci pone una domanda attraverso il film, ma se gli anni ’60 avessero avuto un lato oscuro? Questo film vuole dimostrare proprio questo il rovescio della medaglia

PLOT
Eloise Turner, for all Ellie, is a dreamer girl with a great talent for drawing and she decides to leave her idyllic countryside village to move to London to become a stylist. Development
Edgar Wright first wrote it in 2007 and presented the plot as a horror Valentine’s Day in Soho. Edgar Right grew up in Somerset and after turning eighteen he cultivated his obsession with 60s music, so this passion of his contributed to writing and deepening the themes of Last Night in Soho.

Film script
After the wrap of “Baby Driver” instead of working on a sequel to the film, he started working on something completely different and said the scenes should be like dreams so he called Wilson-Cairns and asked if he would co-write the film. screenplay of The Last Night in Soho so together with Lucy Pardee they decided to write the film in the 60s so as to describe the history of the area in that period. Then Wilson-Cairns said the audience should fall in love with Sandie so she shot a scene where Anya Taylor Joy auditioned Petula Clark’s song “Downtown”

Casting
Edgar Right presented Anya Taylor Joy with the draft of “Last Night in Soho” and initially she was introduced as Eloise, but later they gave her the role of Sandie, while Matt Smith and Thomasin McKenzie were cast later

Most of the songs chosen were from the 60’s such as Petula Clark’s DownTown song performed by Anya Taylor Joy after which they stripped it into a double vinyl

The screenwriters build two narrative levels that work in the mirror which are Eloise and Sandy: Eloise in the present and Sandy in the past and between the two the opposition is also temperamental, Eloise is shy and reserved while Sandy always proves to be unscrupulous and does everything to become famous until she becomes the victim, so the thriller story has horror veins, however the 60s motifs of the film run on all of this which drags the soundtrack of which the film is worth watching. Edgar Right shows a nostalgia for an era never lived, but to which he is magnetically attracted and asks us a question through the film, but what if the 60s had a dark side? This film wants to demonstrate just that the other side of the coin
