Noi (2019) – Analisi Simbolica
(CON SPOILER)
Il film nasconde fino all’ultimo l’identità di Adelaide perché rivelandola cambia tutto il senso della storia perché il film è una messinscena della lotta di classe di masse sfruttate contro gli “eletti”.
Uno degli elementi più interessanti della storia è la caratterizzazione totalmente inaspettata da fronti contrapposti: gli americani in “superfice” presentano un élite di privilegiati, mentre i cloni “poveri” vengono segregati e maltrattati e sono tutt’altro che innocenti e si trasformano in assetati assassini in cerca di vendetta.
I personaggi come Adelaide e Red sono la personificazione delle dinamiche di classe, delle opportunità e le trappole che le accompagnano e la parabola di Adelaide serve a far capire che una volta che gli a “ultimi” viene data una possibilità non sono disposti a rinunciarvi nemmeno per aiutare i loro “fratelli” più sfortunati.
La narrazione di Adelaide, che inizia essendo una bambina felice e poi a sua volta la leader di un popolo di oppressi e il senso di ingiustizia è un potentissimo collante che può venire trasformato in nazionalismo quando una parte della società viene lasciata indietro. Le vesti doppelgӓnger sono rosse che è il colore del sangue
Metafore
Molto probabilmente il film è una gigantesca metafora della società americana e il presagio di un imminente rivoluzione e partendo dalla fine il piccolo Jason Wilson che è seduto di fianco alla mamma mentre guida e si è accorto che la madre non si è fatta scrupoli ad uccidere il doppio senza esitazioni, questo è l’istinto materno che porta a compiere qualsiasi gesto.
La famiglia Wilson è l’incarnazione del principio del “l’erba del vicino è sempre più verde”, sono abbastanza benestanti da potersi permettere una casa in villeggiatura e una barca di seconda mano, hanno una famiglia perfetta eppure non cessano di un attimo d’invidiare i loro vicini, i Tyler che hanno una villa più lussuosa e con un motoscafo e una macchina all’ultimo grido. L’uomo è talmente focalizzato sui suoi averi e si scorda delle persone intorno a lui meno fortunate. I Tetherd non sono che altro che la personificazione di colui che per primo gli ha dimenticati, emarginati e abbandonati.
I cloni sono la rappresentazione di ognuno di noi che veniamo privati del lusso poter fare scelte quotidiane di cui veniamo privati
Le Forbici
I cloni guidati da Red, portano delle tute rosse e sono armati di bellissime forbici dorate che non sono scelte a caso che per gli antagonisti si chiamano “Unterthering” che è la liberazione del legame con cui è in superfice e rappresentano una conseguenza del populismo, il taglio del legame di dipendenza tra le masse sofferenti e le Élite fortunate
Il doppio
Il doppelgӓnger è una copia della stessa persona che è generalmente malvagio, Jordan Peele è sempre stato affascinato e da qui che nasce la concezione che i “nostri peggior nemici a volte siamo noi stessi” e ognuno di noi ha un lato oscuro e Jordan Peele cerc di fare leva sulla nostra più grande paura, ovvero una metà oscura che non vorremmo avere
Temi trattati
Uno dei temi trattati è “la lotta sulla disparità di classe” dove ci mostra una realtà sotterranea che sogna un pasto caldo, il desiderio di condurre un vita più umana. Una condanna all’egoismo e alla cecità di chi ha tutto nella vita e il senso d’ingiustizia mette insieme i deboli per rivendicare i propri diritti e Peele con questo film ci vuole mostrare come una persona nata nella miseria possa avere “fortuna” con i mezzi giusti. Dopo di che il regista si prende gioco dello spettatore infatti ci mostra due personaggi che non sono quello che sono per colpa dei pregiudizi che che si basano sulle apparenze
Il Significato di “Geremia 11:11:
“Perciò cosi parla il SIGNORE: Ecco, io faccio venir su di loro una calamità, alla quale non potranno sfuggire. Essi grideranno a me, ma io non li ascolterò”
Geremia è uno dei maggiori profeti dell’antico testamento chiamato anche “Il Profeta Piangente” e ha scritto l’omonimo libro nell’Antico Testamento, cosi come il “Libro delle Lamentazioni” e i due “Libri dei Re”. Geremia fu incaricato di consegnare la parola di Dio al popolo di Giuda mettendolo in guardia sulla distruzione di Gerusalemme per avere infranto le regole e adorato falsi idoli.
Geremia nello specifico non sopportava i genitori che bruciavano i propri figli per sacrificarli a Moloch e s’inchinavano a Baal. Poi dio a Geremia che sarebbe stato tormentato dalla fame ed esiliato dagli stranieri.
Questo verso della Bibbia si concentra sui falsi Dei, che abbiamo adorato e ora ripiangiamo il vero Dio, ma lui non ci ascolta.
Nel film “Noi” gli abitanti di Santa Cruz vengono attaccati dai cosiddetti Tethered/Doppelgarger e loro sono “la sottoclasse maltrattata, esiliata e senza voce” e sono il Male che incarna nella popolazione di ogni luogo.
La seconda parte della profezia avviene quando Adelaide mostra un po’ di sentimento per i Tethered, ma “è troppo tardi” dare una parola gentile su delle persone che sono “adulte” e cresciute discriminate dalla città, ma ci sono molte cose parallele a questo attualmente questo si può pensare al denaro, la tecnologia, i media e le celebrità, queste “divinità” nel film sono spesso presenti nella famiglia Elisabeth Moss e si fanno “comandare” da un maggiordomo digitale chiamato Ophelia. Noi adoriamo tutte queste cose ignorando che ci c’è una schiera di persone che stanno soffrendo. Un altro riferimento a Geremia sono le persone che bruciano nel fuoco come Moloch, in questo noi vediamo Jason, Pluto, che tra l’altro è il diminutivo di Plutone (il Dio degli Inferi) che brucia dalla metà inferiore del viso perchè Jason lo fa camminare all’indietro dentro ad un incendio e l’idea di sacrificare bambini ha un ulteriore risonanza. Di tutti i componenti della famiglia dei Tethered, Pluto è quello più sadico e quello più incontrollabile, ma forse quello meno indicativo cosi Jordan Peele lascia intendere che se incasinerete la vita dei vostri figli diventeranno livorosi.
Alla fine troviamo la “pura simmetria di base” dal numero del versetto 11:11 perchè non solo compare durante la partita di baseball che Gabe sta guardando, il commentatore fa notare il punteggio sono proprio le 11:11 di sera e ovviamente rispecchia la teoria del doppelganger: 11:11 – 4 contro 4
I DOPPELGANGER
I Tethered che significa “Legati”: si definiscono il “popolo del sottosuolo” emergono all’improvviso dalla superfice per prendere possesso del territorio ed eliminare i propri “simili”. Sono come zombie senz’anima che sono privi di volontà propria e sono condannati a ripetere le stesse azioni dei loro corrispettivi “cloni”, …tutti tranne Red
I CONIGLI
I conigli insieme alle forbici dorate fanno parte delle immagini-simbolo del film. Il film si apre con un immagine di conigli in gabbia e scopriamo nell’andare avanti nel film che vengono allevati nel sottosuolo per nutrire i Tethered. Ma oltre a questo hanno anche altri valori simbolici come dalla cavia da laboratorio che in questo caso rappresenta i Tethred e infine Alice nel paese delle meraviglie che li rappresenta il coniglio che conduce “nella tana del bianconiglio” ed ha generato la frase stessa
IL MITO DELLA CAVERNA
“Gli incatenati” sono le legati profondamente all’allegoria di Platone, nel racconto ci sono molti prigionieri intrappolati nella caverna con lo sguardo rivolti alle pareti. Alle loro spalle c’è un enorme fuoco nel quale passano animali, oggetti e persone e questi oggetti proiettano sulla parete delle ombre che si scambiano perché non sono mai stati liberi e immaginano di proiettare queste ombre nel mondo reale e Platone immagina queste questi prigioni che si sono liberati dalle catene per un’avventura nella conoscenza superiore. Adelaide e Red sono le facce della stessa medaglia e rappresenta il prigioniero che si è liberato, ma con due destini diversi, mentre Red si è costruita una nuova vita, Adelaide è rimasta intrappolata nel mondo sotterraneo e ne diventa il leader, Red invece si crede un innocente in realtà è un impostore che ha sacrificato il suo doppio per la sua libertà. Le sue motivazioni però sono pur sempre comprensibili come ad esempio le condizioni disumane che devono vivere. Adelaide invece parla di Red e degli altri Tethred come delle ombre facendo contatto ancora con l’allegoria di Platone, infine l’arrivo della famiglia Wilson sulla spiaggia di Santa Cruz si nota che le loro ombre si deformano al sole e sta per indicare l’esistenza dei loro doppi.
SYMBOLIC ANALYSIS
The film hides Adelaide’s identity until the end because revealing it changes the whole meaning of the story because the film is a staging of the class struggle of the exploited masses against the “elected”.
One of the most interesting elements of the story is the totally unexpected characterization from opposing sides: the “surface” Americans present a privileged elite, while the “poor” clones are segregated and abused and are far from innocent and turn into thirsty assassins seeking vengeance.
Characters like Adelaide and Red are the personification of class dynamics, opportunities and the traps that accompany them and Adelaide’s parable serves to make it clear that once the “least” are given a chance they are not willing to give it up either to help their more unfortunate “brothers”.
Adelaide’s narrative, which begins as a happy child and then in turn the leader of an oppressed people and the sense of injustice is a very powerful glue that can be transformed into nationalism when a part of society is left behind. The doppelgӓnger robes are red which is the color of blood
Metaphors
Most likely the film is a gigantic metaphor of American society and the harbinger of an imminent revolution and starting from the end little Jason Wilson who is sitting next to his mother while driving and has realized that his mother has no qualms about killing the double without hesitation, this is the maternal instinct that leads to any gesture.
The Wilson family is the embodiment of the “the grass is always greener on the other side” principle, they are wealthy enough to be able to afford a holiday home and a second hand boat, they have a perfect family yet they do not stop for a moment ‘envy their neighbors, the Tylers who have a more luxurious villa and with a motorboat and a trendy car. The man is so focused on his possessions and forgets about the less fortunate people around him. The Tetherd are nothing more than the personification of the one who first forgot, marginalized and abandoned them.
The clones are the representation of each of us who are deprived of the luxury of being able to make daily choices that we are deprived of
Scissors
The clones led by Red wear red overalls and are armed with beautiful golden scissors which are not chosen at random which for the antagonists are called “Unterthering” which is the liberation of the bond with which it is on the surface and represent a consequence of populism, the cutting of the bond of dependence between the suffering masses and the fortunate elites
Twice
The doppelgӓnger is a copy of the same person who is generally evil, Jordan Peele has always been fascinated and hence the conception that “our worst enemies are sometimes ourselves” and each of us has a dark side and Jordan Peele seeks to leverage our greatest fear, or a dark half that we would not like to have
Topics covered
One of the topics covered is “the struggle against class inequality” where he shows us an underground reality that dreams of a hot meal, the desire to lead a more humane life. A condemnation to the selfishness and blindness of those who have everything in life and the sense of injustice brings together the weak to claim their rights and Peele with this film wants to show us how a person born into poverty can have “luck” with right means. After which the director makes fun of the viewer in fact he shows us two characters who are not what they are because of the prejudices that are based on appearances
The Meaning of “Jeremiah 11:11:
“Therefore thus says the LORD: Behold, I am bringing calamity upon them, from which they shall not escape. They will cry out to me, but I will not listen to them”
Jeremiah is one of the major prophets of the Old Testament also called “The Weeping Prophet” and wrote the book of the same name in the Old Testament, as well as the “Book of Lamentations” and the two “Books of Kings”. Jeremiah was charged with delivering the word of God to the people of Judah warning them of the destruction of Jerusalem for breaking the rules and worshiping false idols.
Jeremiah specifically resented parents who burned their children as sacrifices to Moloch and bowed down to Baal. Then he told Jeremiah that he would be starved and exiled by the foreigners.
This Bible verse focuses on false Gods, that we have worshiped and now mourn the true God, but he does not listen to us.
In the film “We” the inhabitants of Santa Cruz are attacked by the so-called Tethered / Doppelgarger and they are “the abused, exiled and voiceless underclass” and they are the Evil that embodies in the population of every place.
The second part of the prophecy occurs when Adelaide shows some feeling for the Tethered, but “it’s too late” to give a good word about people who are “grown up” and raised discriminated against by the city, but there are many parallels to this currently this can be thought of money, technology, media and celebrities, these “gods” in the film are often present in the Elisabeth Moss family and are “commended” by a digital butler called Ophelia. We adore all these things ignoring that there is a host of people who are suffering. Another reference to Jeremiah is people burning in fire like Moloch, in this we see Jason, Pluto, which by the way is the diminutive of Pluto (God of the Underworld) who burns from the lower half of the face because Jason does walking backwards into a fire and the idea of sacrificing children has further resonance. Of all the members of the Tethered family, Pluto is the most sadistic and the most uncontrollable, but perhaps the least indicative, so Jordan Peele suggests that if you mess up your children’s lives they will become greedy.
We finally find the “pure basic symmetry” from the verse number 11:11 because not only does it show up during the baseball game Gabe is watching, the commentator points out the score is actually 11:11 at night and obviously mirrors the theory of the doppelganger: 11:11 – 4 against 4
THE DOPPELGANGERS
The Tethered which means “Linked”: they define themselves as the “underground people” they suddenly emerge from the surface to take possession of the territory and eliminate their “similar”. They are like soulless zombies who have no will of their own and are doomed to repeat the same actions as their counterparts “clones”, …all except Red
THE RABBITS
The rabbits together with the golden scissors are part of the symbolic images of the film. The film opens with a picture of caged rabbits and we discover as the film progresses that they are being raised underground to feed the Tethered. But in addition to this they also have other symbolic values such as the laboratory guinea pig which in this case represents the Tethreds and finally Alice in Wonderland which represents them the rabbit that leads “down the white rabbit hole” and has generated the phrase itself
THE MYTH OF THE CAVE
“The Chained” are deeply linked to Plato’s allegory, in the story there are many prisoners trapped in the cave with their eyes turned to the walls. Behind them there is a huge fire through which animals, objects and people pass and these objects project shadows onto the wall which they exchange because they have never been free and they imagine projecting these shadows in the real world and Plato imagines these these prisons they have broken free from the shackles for an adventure into higher knowledge. Adelaide and Red are the faces of the same coin and represents the prisoner who has freed himself, but with two different destinies, while Red has built a new life for herself, Adelaide has been trapped in the underworld and becomes its leader, Red instead believes an innocent is actually an imposter who sacrificed his double for his freedom. However, his motivations are still understandable such as the inhumane conditions they have to live. Adelaide instead speaks of Red and the other Tethred as shadows making contact again with Plato’s allgory, finally the arrival of the Wilson family on the beach of Santa Cruz it is noted that their shadows deform in the sun and is about to indicate the existence of their doubles.

After “Scappa Get Out” Jordan Peele wanted to devote himself to a completely horror film and for “Us” he was inspired by the episode “Mirror Image” of Twilight Zone focused on a woman and her doppelgӓnger/clone who segregates her in the tunnels and replaces her.
