Analisi simbolica di Midsommar

RUNE, RITI E DIPINTI

Oltre ad essere un film dedicato alla rottura “Midsommar” è anche un film con un sacco di simboli e riferimenti a film come “Shining”.
Nel film sono presenti vari dipinti che con lo sviluppo del film è come se raccontassero il film con le immagini, questi quadri sono stati creati dall’artista Mu Pan con scene ispirate alle opere di John Bauer. Mu Pan ha dato un titolo che rispecchia molto il carattere di Christian, mentre John Bauer è autore di un dipinto molto particolare nella stanza di Dani raffigurante un orso con una bambina con in testa una corona e allude agli ultimi minuti del film.
Quest’ultimo dipinto è l’ultima scena del film quando Dany “condanna” a morte Christian facendolo prima cucire nella pelle di un orso e poi bruciato nel tempio, durante il film nella casa di Siv si vede chiaramente dipinto un orso bruciato vivo

Ari Aster ha fatto il paragone del rogo finale ad una scatola con degli oggetti di una ex relazione all’interno e che ricorda anche film come “The Wiker Man” di Robin Hardy, nel quale il protagonista è uno straniero, all’interno di una statua di paglia, a cui viene dato fuoco.
Una cosa importante del film sono i dipinti di Ragnar Persson in stile medievale e grazie a quelli si può avere una visione più grande della trama del film.
Il dormitorio in questo film ha la stessa funzione della casa delle bambole in Hereditary, su un lato è raffigurato due persone che fanno sesso e negli ultimi minuti c’è il tradimento di Christian con Maja, verso Dani, ed anche un accenno al discorso che fanno all’inizio sulle ragazze svedesi, un’altra illustrazione ci mostra delle persone con dei tagli sulle mani e dopo di che vediamo i due anziani cadere dalla rupe.

Sulle porte sono raffigurate delle rune e nel film vengono menzionate le Rune del Fuþark antico e Fuþark recente, come simbolo dell’evoluzione dello stesso linguaggio e allo stesso tempo viene assegnato ad ogni personaggio una runa: Dani ha una R disegnata sul suo vestito che simboleggia il percorso/viaggio, la runa che rappresenta Christian è una con la “freccia rivolta verso l’alto” che simboleggia ironicamente la volontà si sacrificarsi che Christian non possiede, mentre la “clessidra” simboleggia il giorno/risveglio che rimanda alla rivelazione di Dani sulla persona che è Christian.
Anche la forma della tavola da pranzo ha la forma di una runa che simboleggia la tradizione, lo stesso ingresso nel villaggio ha la medesima forma solo rovesciata e la X all’interno del tempio significa “dono” poiché la comunità vuole donarsi agli Dei. Nel dormitorio c’è un arazzo che raffigura una strana storia d’amore dove una ragazza mette il suo sangue mestruale nella bevanda e un pelo pubico nel tortino di carne del ragazzo che sceglie, in questo caso è Christian.
La festa di Mezza Estate è un evento scandinavo che si svolge intorno al Solstizio D’Estate e inizialmente era nata come festa pagana mentre in seguito fu unificata alla festa cristiana di San Giovanni Battista che è una celebrazione del profeta.

Nel villaggio ci sono spesso dei riferimenti a Giovanni Battista, cominciando dall’inizio del film Pelle dice a Dani che il festival dura 9 giorni e quell’anno era speciale perchè quell’evento si verificava ogni 90 anni, nella Bibbia la Vergine Maria rimase con la madre di Giovanni Battista, Elisabetta, per 90 giorni prima che partorisse.
Un altro simbolo per eccellenza del film è l’Albero di Maggio che vediamo ricoperto di fiori come indice di buon auspicio dove ha luogo una festa tradizionale di mezz’estate che ruota intorno alla fertilità e dove viene eletta la Regina di Maggio. La comunità fa dei sacrifici umani per una nuova vita, come ad esempio il suicidio di massa dell’ Heaven’s Gate.

Ogni membro del gruppo di amici viene in un certo senso “sacrificato” per questo festività: il primo è Josh che s’intrufola di notte di nascosto nel fienile e fotografa il libro sacro, dopo avergli proibito di farlo cosi dopo di che viene attaccato da Ulf che è lo stesso uomo che s’arrabbiò con Mark per avere fatto la pipì sull’albero ancestrale, ma la cosa più inquietante che Ulf aggredisce Josh mentre indossa la faccia di Mark la quale viene poi posta su un manichino di paglia con un cappello da giullare, ed è questo che era il destino di Mark da quando lo abbiamo visto con gli abitanti giocare a Skin The Fool ovvero il pagliaccio della compagnia.

il secondo è Simon, il quale scompare misteriosamente con la sua ragazza, Christian lo trova legato a faccia in giù nel pollaio con la schiena squartata e il fegato e le costole scoperte indicando che i polmoni si stanno ancora muovendo, quindi che è ancora vivo; questa tortura si chiama “Aquila di Sangue” e veniva spesso usata dai vichinghi.
Infine c’è Ruben che viene considerato l’oracolo dalla comunità che è stato volutamente fatto nascere da due consanguinei in modo che abbia la capacità di giudizio non offuscata a causa del suo sangue puro e ci viene mostrato sdraiato su uno scranno ricoperto di cotone come se fosse su una nuvola.

Il rogo finale del film può risultare un piano di Pelle, perchè c’è una teoria che l’omicidio-suicidio della famiglia di Dani sia stata architettata dal ragazzo, perchè all’inizio vediamo che i genitori hanno la corona di fiori vicino alla foto della figlia, sulla carta da parati ci sono dei fiori gialli e infine Pelle confessa a Dani che non vedeva l’ora che si unisse alla sua comunità, ma indipendentemente da quello Dani sembra la candidata perfetta per Pelle, dato che il suo compleanno coincide con l’inizio del Festival e Dani ha 25 anni e Pelle dice che la sua comunità paragona il ciclo della vita alle 4 stagioni: i primo 18 anni di vita equivalgono alla Primavera e Dani si trova quasi nel ciclo successivo ovvero l’estate quindi la “mezz’estate”.

PART. 2

RUNES, RITES AND PAINTINGS

Besides being a breakup movie “Midsommar” is also a movie with a lot of symbols and references to movies like “The Shining”.
In the film there are various paintings that with the development of the film it is as if they tell the film with images, these paintings were created by the artist Mu Pan with scenes inspired by the works of John Bauer. Mu Pan has given a title that very much reflects Christian’s character, while John Bauer is the author of a very particular painting in Dani’s room depicting a bear with a little girl with a crown on her head and alludes to the last minutes of the film.
This last painting is the last scene of the film when Dany “sentences” Christian to death by having him first sewn into the skin of a bear and then burned in the temple, during the film in Siv’s house a bear burned alive is clearly painted
Ari Aster made the comparison of the final fire to a box with objects from a former relationship inside and which also recalls films such as Robin Hardy’s “The Wiker Man”, in which the protagonist is a foreigner, inside a straw statue, which is set on fire.
A major thing in the film is the medieval style paintings of Ragnar Persson and through those one can get a bigger insight into the plot of the film.
The dormitory in this film has the same function as the dollhouse in Hereditary, on one side two people are depicted having sex and in the last minutes there is Christian’s betrayal with Maja, towards Dani, and also a hint of the speech that they do at the beginning on the Swedish girls, another illustration shows us people with cuts on their hands and after that we see the two old men falling from the cliff.
Runes are depicted on the doors and in the film the Runes of ancient Futhark and recent Futhark are mentioned, as a symbol of the evolution of the same language and at the same time each character is assigned a rune: Dani has an R drawn on her dress which symbolizes the path/journey, the rune representing Christian is one with the “arrow pointing up” which ironically symbolizes the will to sacrifice that Christian does not possess, while the “hourglass” symbolizes the day/awakening which refers to Dani’s revelation about the person who is Christian.
Even the shape of the dining table has the shape of a rune that symbolizes tradition, the same entrance to the village has the same shape only upside down and the X inside the temple means “gift” since the community wants to give itself to the Gods. In the dormitory there is a tapestry that depicts a strange love story where a girl puts her menstrual blood into the drink and a pubic hair into the meat pie of the boy she chooses, in this case it’s Christian.
The Midsummer Festival is a Scandinavian event that takes place around the Summer Solstice and was initially born as a pagan festival and was later unified with the Christian festival of St. John the Baptist which is a celebration of the prophet.
In the village there are often references to John the Baptist, starting from the beginning of the film Pelle tells Dani that the festival lasts 9 days and that year was special because that event occurred every 90 years, in the Bible the Virgin Mary remained with John the Baptist’s mother, Elizabeth, for 90 days before she gave birth.
Another quintessential symbol of the film is the Maypole which we see covered in flowers as an auspicious sign where a traditional midsummer festival takes place that revolves around fertility and where the Queen of May is elected.

Each member of the group of friends is in a certain sense “sacrificed” for this festivity: the first is Josh who sneaks into the barn secretly at night and photographs the sacred book, after forbidding him to do so, after which he is attacked by Ulf who is the same man who got mad at Mark for peeing on the ancestral tree, but more disturbing Ulf attacks Josh while wearing Mark’s face which is then placed on a straw mannequin with a hat as a jester, and this was Mark’s destiny since we saw him with the inhabitants playing Skin The Fool or the company clown
the second is Simon, who mysteriously disappears with his girlfriend, Christian finds him tied face down in the chicken coop with his back cut open and his liver and ribs exposed indicating that the lungs are still moving, therefore that he is still alive; this torture is called “Blood Eagle” and was often used by the Vikings.
Finally there is Reuben who is considered the oracle by the community who was deliberately born of two blood relatives so that he has the ability to judge unclouded due to his pure blood and is shown to us lying on a bench covered with cotton as if it were on a cloud.
The final burning of the film may turn out to be Pelle’s plan, because there is a theory that the murder-suicide of Dani’s family was masterminded by the boy, because at the beginning we see that the parents have the wreath near the photo of her daughter, there are yellow flowers on the wallpaper and finally Pelle confesses to Dani that she couldn’t wait for her to join her community, but regardless Dani seems like the perfect candidate for Pelle, as her birthday coincides with the beginning of the Festival and Dani is 25 years old and Pelle says that his community compares the cycle of life to the 4 seasons: the first 18 years of life are equivalent to Spring and Dani is almost in the next cycle or summer therefore the ” midsummer”.
